[Hurricane Sandy] International inbound call issues - Wednesday 31st October 2012 at 19:30

Dear all,

Those of you with an International number from us will now be experiencing loss of service. In summary, our provider is based in New York City and the Data Centre they are based in has just run out of backup power. This is an email we have just received:

----------------

As I’m sure you all know by now, Hurricane Sandy hit NYC and New Jersey on Monday evening with devastating effect.  Beginning around 6pm local time on Monday, most locations in the greater NYC area began to lose power or get flooded.

We lost power at 6pm on Monday and have no internet connection.  I am writing this email from a friend’s office 20 miles away, as he is one of the lucky few to have power and internet.  Over 80% of New Jersey was hit by a power outage and lower NYC was hit with a power failure and devastating flood (and I would be remiss not to mention the utter destruction of the NJ beaches).  We have been told not to expect power to be restored for a week to 10 days.  I hope they’re just being conservative.

While our administrative access to our network was severed on Monday evening, our service remained intact until this evening.  The colo location holding our equipment was on generator power for over 24 hours, but then the backup generator failed.  So, our service is currently not operating.

Our colo provider is working as fast as they can to replace the backup generator and restore service to not only us but to their 1000 service provider customers.  We apologize for the disruption, but there is nothing we can do except work with everyone to restore service as quickly as possible.

Thank you for your patience and understanding while we work to get your service restored from the effects of this devastating storm.

Thanks, and again really, really sorry for this.

Gavin.
